The Chengdu Municipal Government embarked on a strategic plan to create an integrated sport, leisure and entertainment precinct on the eastern edge of the city. Submission were requested from a limited list of invited domestic and international firms.

The site formed the eastern “gateway” into Chengdu city. Its major feature included a water course that cut diagonally across the land which formed natural water bodies within the site. A number of significant cultural and historical temples were also located on the north-eastern corner of precinct land which needed to be preserved.

Our master planning approach was to reinforce the existing urban edge by positioning the majority of built forms on the western boundary. The main stadium was used as a destination point and visual “anchor” located centrally between the major urban transport and pedestrian access nodes. The retail and entertainment precinct aimed at creating a “Universal Studio” type experience with a mix of restaurants, themed retail, big box stores and specialist attractions. The southern precinct was anchored by sport and educational facilities, and allowance for a future convention and exhibition centre.
