The Sports Park was created as the focal point for the 2005 China National Games and in doing so, created permanent new homes for the City’s provincial stadium, indoor arena, swimming center, tennis center, and sport regional offices. Conceived as a “People’s Place”, the original master plan aimed at delivering an integrated sport and leisure destination, that was unified architecturally and through the landscape, as Nanjing’s urban park for the new Hexi district, that catered to both active and passive pursuits.

Each building within the site was crafted to represent the unique sporting activities within. The dynamic “red” of the flowing Stadium arches have now become a symbol for Nanjing. The Swimming Center has proved very popular with an average of 8,000 visitors a day to use its various water based facilities. The Indoor Arena for both sport and entertainment. And the landscape continues to evolve as the original client massages the soft –scapes to create new and interesting activity spaces. AS a development in what was a green field site in 2002, the Sports Park has subsequently acted as an urban generator of form and axial civic connections as the new Hexi downtown master plan has evolved.
